Beausoleil First Nation Waste Management
At work for you...
The Beausoleil First Nation Public Works Program consists of Waste Management, Roads Maintenance and the Chimnissing N'biish Gamig.
We will be planning a series of workshops about Solid Waste Management throughout the year and providing challenging Recycling initiatives for you as the homeowner and the community as a whole. So be on the look out for upcoming workshops and activities.
The Beausoleil First Nation Lands Management office had been attending various environmental meetings initiated by Indian Affairs, and was introduced to Wendy Mortimer from Ontario First Nation Technical Services. Wendy had informed the group about the Earth Keepers Program and the training being provided to First Nations by the Ontario First Nation Technical Services.
Although the Beausoleil First Nation Waste Management Crew have ample work experience in their field, Jennifer Copegog felt that specific training on Proper Solid Waste Management would surely benefit the crew and benefit the community.
Initially, Clayton and Allison King were the two intended participants. I am currently training as the Public Works Clerk and working in the transportation area, and I joined the group after the first session. With each training session, we realized the importance of having a proper Solid Waste Management plan in place. One of our tasks was to implement a Task Force Committee composwed of interested community members. In addition to taking the training with Ontario First Nation Technical Services, we were provided with funding for travel to various parts of Ontario. As participants, we can confirm that the Beausoleil First Nation already excels some of the other First Nations in Waste Management.
The Beausoleil First Nation Earth Keepers Task Force members are: - Allison King - Clayton King - Jennifer Copegog - Gloria King - Joyce Solomon - Dwayne King - Mike Cass - Rod Monague Jr. - Janet Newdick - Vern Cottrell (Cottager's Association Representative)
Our task is to complete a Solid Waste Management Plan for the Beausoleil First Nation community. The Beausoleil First Nation Earth Keepers Task Force members are currently working on this plan and once completed, it will be presented to Chief and Council for their support and to the community for it's support.
I like to encourage everyone in the community to talk about the benefits in following a Waste Management plan. Ask questions about the recycling process. Think of helpful recycling tips to share with others. Think about the future generations that will benefit when we follow a proper Waste Management Plan, we are taking steps to ensure that the land is being protected.
I would also like to thank everyone who came out to our first Earth Keepers Community Awareness Workshop. The posters that were drawn for the poster contest were all winners to us. Thank you to all the students that participated in our poster contest, and congratulations to our winners. We will be keeping the posters for future use as promotional items such as calendars and so forth. Keep a look out for future contests to come. Keep a look out for our next workshop on backyard and centralized composting.
Be Supportive! Be Committed! Be Proud! Be an Earth Keeper!
